AMI Serial #'s and Estimated Production

It is estimated that AMI/Rowe produced around 319,000 jukeboxes between 1935 - 1979, this compares to the 430,000 for Rock-Ola and the 600,000 - 700,000 produced by each of Seeburg and Wurlitzer for the same time period. Unlike the others, AMI/Rowe continued production into the 80's and produced another 65,000 machines through 1988.

The production information that follows is based on 1,597 serial numbers collected during the past 11 years with the help of many jukebox collectors and some operators/dealers.

The Serial # and Production Estimates that follow, are grouped by submodel and model based on an estimate of whether information that appears relevant. All of the submodels are shown as AMI used separate serial number blocks for each. The tables include:

  • Year: Estimated "Model Year" which may vary slightly from the year produced as actual production usually commenced late in the prior year
  • # of Pts: This is the number of serial number data points that the subsequent data is based on ... a "1" indicates a single point, hence any further analysis is suspect, unless backed by additional information
  • Min Serial Number: The Minimum serial number in the range available from the data points. In the case of AMI, the xxx001 is shown as the minimum even though no person actually submitted this information. This is based on internal AMI corrospondence which indicated this as the starting range
  • Max Serial Number: The Maximum serial number in the range available from the data points
  • Known Production: Usually the Maximum Minus the Minimum Serial Number (Plus 1) unless there is a known starting range ... e.g. that ranges start with xxx001.
  • Estimated Production: This takes into account estimated starting range, plus a small allowance for additional production (usually rounding off to the nearest 25). The final estimate for a given model is shown in BOLD type.

    • Basis for AMI/Rowe Serial Numbering

    AMI/Rowe was generally consistent in their serial numbering of Jukeboxes. It appears to be totally chronological based on time of production and they did not intermix jukebox serial numbering with other items such as wallboxes and speakers, though there are two few data points of speakers to make a solid judgement. The chonological numbering system appears to have started with the 1947 Model A, "Mother of Plastic", at 000001. Though based on the limited data received on the Model A and B's, this may be suspect. In many cases I believe the numbers submitted for the Model A's and B's were taken from the Mechanism, rather than the cabinet. The mechanisms for AMI's are the same for Model A through D and are chronological. After the Model A, “blocks” appear to have been issued for upcoming models, usually in increments of 5,000, 10,000 or more. As such all the numbers were not used, but the models did not overlap as prior ones did. This "block concept" was known to be used through to the late 60's, but is assummed to be carried on much later.
